Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss

The Gastric Sleeve surgery is relatively new when it comes to bariatric surgery. During this procedure, a bariatric surgeon removes about 60 percent of the stomach so that it takes the shape of a tube or sleeve.

According to Dr. Ata Ahmad, Bariatric Surgeon, the gastric sleeve removes part of the stomach, including a section that produces hunger.

This operation is performed laparoscopically, meaning that the surgeon makes small incisions as opposed to one large incision.

“Most people lose over 50 percent of their excess body weight over a one year period with the gastric sleeve,” Dr. Ahmad said.

This procedure provides a “short operating time and recovery like the
LAP-BAND®, but without the need for a foreign body or frequent adjustments,” said Dr. Irfan Wadiwala, Bariatric Surgeon. “It also provides for a more rapid and an overall higher excess body weight loss close to 70 percent like the gastric bypass but without the added potential complications.”
